// how it works

How it's calculated

  • Lost sales

Your monthly revenue through the site, spread evenly over every hour, times the share of sales that do not come back after an outage.

  • Lost staff time

People who cannot work while the site or server is down, times their hourly cost.

  • Cost of the outage

Lost sales plus lost staff time per hour, times how long the site is down. For repeat outages, times how often they happen in a year.

How much downtime does each uptime level allow?

Uptime percentages look close together, but the difference in hours offline is large.

Common questions

What does 99.9% uptime mean?
It means the site can be unreachable 0.1% of the time: about 8 hours 46 minutes a year, or roughly 44 minutes a month. Hosting providers usually measure uptime per month, so check how yours counts it and what they refund when they miss it.
How do you calculate the cost of downtime?
Add up what one hour offline costs: sales that do not come back, plus the cost of staff who cannot work. Multiply that by how long the site is down. Divide the hourly cost by 60 for the cost per minute. Damage to reputation and search visibility comes on top and is hard to put a number on.
What is an uptime SLA?
A service level agreement is your hosting provider's written promise of how much of the time your site will be reachable, usually per month, and what you get back when they miss it. The refund is typically a share of the hosting fee, far less than what the outage cost you, so an SLA does not replace monitoring and a plan for outages.
What uptime should a business website aim for?
For a shop or a site that brings in leads, 99.9% or better is a sensible goal, and reachable with good hosting, monitoring and careful updates. Going beyond 99.99% needs redundant servers, which tends to pay off only when every minute offline is expensive.
What causes website downtime?
The most common causes are failed updates, expired domains or SSL certificates, overloaded or failing servers, attacks, and outages at the hosting provider. Most of them can be prevented with monitoring, tested updates and backups that have been restored at least once.
How do I know how much downtime my site has?
Use an uptime monitor that checks your site every minute or few minutes from several locations and alerts you when it stops responding. Your hosting provider's status page only covers their infrastructure, not problems with your own site.
Does downtime hurt SEO?
Short outages are unlikely to affect rankings. If search engines find the site down repeatedly or for a day or more, pages can drop out of results until they are crawled again. During planned maintenance, return a 503 status so crawlers know to come back later.
